CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati freshman offensive lineman Jeremiah Kelly, an early enrollee on the football team, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at his residence.
Kelly, 18, joined the Bearcats program this spring and participated in team practices. The university did not release a cause of death.
Coach Scott Satterfield expressed sorrow at the loss of the young athlete. "The Bearcats football family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of this outstanding young man," Satterfield said in a statement. "In the short time Jeremiah has spent with our team, he has made a real impact, both on the field and in our locker room."
Kelly arrived in Cincinnati from Avon, Ohio. He was a standout at Avon High School, where he helped lead his team to a perfect 16-0 season and a state championship last fall.
During his senior year at Avon, Kelly earned multiple accolades, including first-team all-conference and all-district honors. He was also named the Southwestern Conference Lineman of the Year.
Athletic Director John Cunningham echoed Satterfield's sentiments regarding the freshman's passing. "We've suffered a heartbreaking loss today," Cunningham stated. "All of us at UC send our love and prayers to the Kelly family."
Cunningham added that the university would provide support to the Kelly family and the Bearcats student-athletes in the wake of this tragedy. Cincinnati's spring practice session concluded last week.
Jeremiah Kelly had quickly become a valued member of the team despite his short tenure, leaving a lasting impression on teammates and staff. The university community is mourning his loss. More details about the unexpected death are expected.
University of Cincinnati officials have not provided further information surrounding the circumstances of his death.
