Pittsburgh Steelers officials maintain confidence that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will ultimately sign with the team, even as the veteran delays his decision, citing personal issues.
Rodgers has remained in contact with head coach Mike Tomlin, according to reports. Team president Art Rooney II stated recently the organization continues receiving signals that Aaron Rodgers intends to join them.
Rodgers publicly discussed his situation last week, explaining he is working through personal matters that require his priority. He stated he has kept teams informed throughout the process and is trying to be open but cannot commit until these issues are resolved.
While the Steelers have not set an official deadline for Rodgers, the start of Organized Team Activities on May 27 is seen by some as a practical target date. Former quarterback Matt Hasselbeck indicated missing this phase would be detrimental for a veteran joining a new team. Rooney II also expressed a desire for a decision soon to integrate Rodgers into offseason programs. If he’s coming, we would like to get him here soon for some of that, Rooney II said.
The Steelers' recent personnel decisions suggest the team is building a roster around the expectation of acquiring a veteran starting quarterback like Aaron Rodgers. General manager Omar Khan stated prior to the NFL Draft that the team planned to add quarterbacks to reach four by training camp.
The draft approach included selecting players focused on immediate production rather than long-term development. These included defensive tackle Derrick Harmon and running back Kaleb Johnson, seen as ready to contribute quickly. The team also added defensive end Jack Sawyer, who started 29 college games and can instantly join the defensive line rotation.
Further evidence of this win-now focus includes the acquisition of wide receiver DK Metcalf via trade and his subsequent four-year contract extension. This move is seen as consistent with preparing for a high-level veteran quarterback. Metcalf and Rodgers have reportedly worked out together during the offseason..The team added quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round. Some observers viewed this move as seeking a backup who would not be perceived as a threat to a veteran starter like Aaron Rodgers.
Some have drawn parallels between the Steelers' approach and the steps the New York Jets took when pursuing Rodgers, focusing on immediate wins and roster additions tailored to the quarterback.
The Steelers have three quarterbacks currently on their roster. Khan stated the team would have four by the start of training camp.
