The Philadelphia Eagles and tight end Dallas Goedert are close to finalizing a reworked contract aimed at keeping him with the team, according to NFL sources. This development suggests a reversal from earlier speculation that Goedert could be on the trade market this offseason.
Talks on a new deal accelerated after the Eagles did not trade the 30-year-old during last month's NFL draft. The team also chose not to select a tight end prospect, despite the draft class being noted for its depth at the position.
While an agreement is not yet complete, signs point toward Goedert remaining in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. He has reportedly been working out and participating in recent spring team activities at the NovaCare Complex.
General Manager Howie Roseman addressed Goedert's status after the draft, offering praise for the player.
Goedert is currently in the final year of the four-year extension he signed in 2021, scheduled to earn $14.25 million. That salary is not guaranteed, which reportedly led the Eagles to entertain potential trade offers.
Sources indicate Goedert had options to leave the team. However, both sides ultimately concluded that negotiating a new deal was the best path forward.
In March, the Eagles signed veteran tight ends Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson to one-year contracts. Neither player was viewed as a direct replacement for Goedert, but they provide competition alongside returning tight end Grant Calcaterra.
Despite missing time due to injury over the past four seasons, Goedert demonstrated his value late last season and in the playoffs. He led the team with 17 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown during their playoff run and played a role in the run game with his blocking. His performance when healthy reinforces his position as a capable dual-threat tight end.
A new contract would likely include some guaranteed money for Goedert, while potentially lowering his salary cap hit for the 2025 season from the current $11.8 million figure.
Roseman expressed his admiration for the player. "Dallas is a heck of a player — a heck of a player, a heck of a person," Howie Roseman said. "Certainly don’t want to do anything publicly where we’re discussing anyone’s business, but I have so much respect for him. Been to two Super Bowls together and obviously would love him on this team. You always love having Dallas on this team, but we’re not there right now on any of that. But, love Dallas Goedert."
