Jack Draper secured a spot in the Madrid Open semifinals and will enter the world's top five rankings for the first time in his career following his quarterfinal victory. The 23-year-old Briton defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 6-4 in a match that lasted one hour and 17 minutes.
Draper's rapid rise sees him become the first British player to enter into the top five since Andy Murray. The win ensures he will overtake Grand Slam record-holder Novak Djokovic when the official rankings are updated Monday.
The quarterfinal against Arnaldi saw Draper dominate the first set, winning it in just 25 minutes. Arnaldi offered more resistance in the second set, but Draper maintained control.
Draper's serve was particularly strong during the match. He dropped only 10 points on his serve and did not face a break point against the Italian.
The achievement builds on Draper's recent success, which includes winning the Indian Wells title in March.
Draper now advances to face Italian Lorenzo Musetti in what will be his first ATP clay-court semifinal. Musetti reached this stage by defeating Gabriel Diallo in his quarterfinal match.
Speaking after his win, Draper commented on his approach.
"I know I can win any match and lose any match," Draper said. "I am fearful I could lose but that helps me compete the way I do."
