A student athlete from Bay Village High School died this week from injuries sustained during a lacrosse game Tuesday night.

Dylan Veselic, a sophomore at Bay High School, was injured while playing against Olmsted Falls. He was taken for medical care following the incident.

The Bay Village School District confirmed Veselic's death Thursday morning. Superintendent Scot Prebles informed families in a message, stating the district mourns the loss of the high school student.

The Veselic family released a statement, sharing the news and expressing gratitude for community support. "We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond," the statement read. "We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Witnesses reported the injury occurred when an Olmsted Falls player took a shot on goal and the ball struck Veselic at the base of the back of his head, below his helmet, as he moved to block it. Sources initially reported the player was in serious condition following the game.

The Bay Village Lacrosse community is receiving support. Counseling services are available at Bay High School for students, staff, and family members. Olmsted Falls High School is also offering support to its community members.

Superintendent Prebles described Dylan Veselic as a dedicated student and athlete. Dr. Jim Lloyd, Superintendent of Olmsted Falls City School District, offered thoughts and prayers to the family, teammates, and the Bay community. He acknowledged the quick actions of his high school team, administrators, trainers, EMS, and police department at the game.

A prayer service is scheduled for Thursday evening at Saint Raphael Church in Bay Village. The Bay Village Boys Lacrosse team's schedule shows their game planned for Thursday has been canceled.

Community members have organized a Meal Train for the Veselic family, which has received considerable donations. Meal Train donations are being collected to assist the family.
