Desert Highlands, a private golf course in Scottsdale, Arizona, is undergoing a $10 million restoration project. The course closed April 28 and plans to reopen in November.
The work on the layout, originally designed by Jack Nicklaus, includes rebuilding each green. Putting surface elevations will be adjusted to better integrate with surrounding features and create more hole locations. New 007XL Creeping Bentgrass is being planted on the greens.
Renovations also cover tee reconstruction, a bunker renovation using Flexxscape lining, and vegetation work. Turf restoration is part of the project as well.
Design modifications are planned for several holes, and new tees will be added. The club's putting course is also set for enhancement and re-grassing.
Desert Highlands holds a ranking among the top private courses in Arizona and is listed among the top modern courses in the United States. It hosted the first two made-for-TV Skins Games in 1983 and 1984.
The project team includes Nicklaus Design, builder Heritage Links, and support from club members.
Desi Speh, Desert Highlands general manager, said the restoration preserves the course's character while adding enhancements for future play.
