Among those competing are 16 past PGA Professional Champions, including Ben Polland, the winner from the previous year. Other past champions in the field include Alex Beach, Rich Berberian Jr., Michael Block, and Matt Dobyns.

Darrell Kestner, the 1996 champion, is making a record 31st start in the event. He is also the oldest player in the field at age 70 and has previously qualified for 11 PGA Championships through this event. Fifty-six players are making their debut in the championship this year. The field includes 56 members from a PGA Golf Management University Program. The South Florida PGA Section has the most participants with 21. Seventy-five Head Golf Professionals are competing, representing the largest membership classification in the field.

The championship began in 1968. Howell Fraser won the inaugural event. The scoring record is 267, set by Larry Gilbert in 1991.
