Two orphaned mountain lion cubs are preparing for a move from the Oakland Zoo to their new residence at the Phoenix Zoo. The cubs, named Fern and Thistle, were discovered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in Portola Valley and are believed to have lost their mother after she was struck by a car.
Vet staff at the Oakland Zoo completed exit examinations on the cubs, confirming their health status ahead of the transfer. Fern also underwent a spay procedure performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.
The cubs are expected to arrive in Phoenix in the coming weeks and will undergo a period of acclimation to their new habitat before being introduced to the public.
Zoo officials have asked people to stay updated on the cubs' journey as they make their way to the Valley of the Sun.
“It’s always hard to say goodbye to the sweet cubs that we care for, but we’re certain these two will also be in great care in Phoenix,” the Oakland Zoo posted on Facebook.
