Bungie has announced the start of a new multi-year storyline for its online game Destiny 2, titled The Fate Saga. Revealed during a livestream, the saga will begin with The Edge of Fate expansion, set for release on July 15. A major development detailed is the Dec. 2 release of the subsequent expansion, Renegades, which will feature licensed Star Wars content.
The Renegades expansion will incorporate elements directly from the Star Wars universe under authorization from Lucasfilm. This includes the addition of items like lightsabers and Han Solo’s blaster for player use. Characters such as Darth Vader will also appear.
The collaboration will extend to cosmetic items, with Dark Side themed skins based on General Grievous, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren available for player classes (Hunter, Titan, Warlock). A desert location resembling Tatooine set within the Star Wars universe is also planned.
This licensed content follows previous instances where Destiny 2 included cosmetics inspired by the Star Wars franchise, such as Stormtrooper skins, but Renegades marks a direct collaboration bringing Destiny 2 Star Wars elements into the game world itself. Additional cosmetics for sparrows and other in-game items are also expected.
The Fate Saga overall will explore the concepts of fate and the fundamental nature of the universe, focusing on the enigmatic beings known as The Nine. The Edge of Fate serves as the introduction to this story, featuring a new destination at the edge of the solar system called Kepler.
New gameplay mechanics and abilities are planned for the initial saga expansions, including Matterspark, which allows players to transform into energy, a Void-focused Relocator Cannon for teleportation, and Mattermorph, which uses Dark Matter and Strand energies to manipulate environments.
Changes to core game systems are also part of the Year of Prophecy, including a redesigned Portal screen to streamline access to activities, updates to Power progression, activity customization, gear tiering, and the introduction of World Tiers for zones. A prologue event titled Rite of the Nine has already been released.
Future updates mentioned include the return of a shooting range feature, a sparrow capable of firing weapons, and the potential return to the Plaguelands area in subsequent major updates.
The Edge of Fate and Renegades expansions are scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X platforms.
“With the Fate Saga, we want to explore one of Destiny’s biggest mysteries: the foundations of our universe,” said Robbie Stevens, Destiny Assistant Game Director, speaking on the overall direction of the new storyline.
