Users across the United States reported difficulties sending money through the Zelle payments platform on Friday. The company acknowledged issues affecting customers at several financial institutions.

The disruption means some users are unable to complete transactions. Reports on tracking sites indicated a spike in problems starting Friday morning, impacting those attempting to use the service for transfers, including urgent payments like rent.

Zelle stated the situation involves an independent third party that provides services to particular financial institutions. The company is working with partners to resolve the matter. Transactions attempted during the outage may be marked as 'payment pending'.

According to information provided to CNN in a statement, payments giant Fiserv may be the third-party provider experiencing difficulties. Fiserv supplies services to a number of banks utilizing the Zelle network.

While Zelle did not specify all affected banks, user reports indicated issues at institutions including Truist and Navy Federal. Other reports mentioned potential impacts at Chase and Webster Bank.

Outages were reported in multiple areas across the country, including cities such as Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, and Tampa, according to one media report from WMAQ.

The current service disruption follows Zelle's recent move to discontinue its standalone mobile application. The company noted last month that most of its users already access the service through their bank's existing mobile applications.

Zelle is widely used, connecting more than 2,200 banks and credit unions. The service handled over $1 trillion in payments during 2024.

The company continues to work towards restoring full service for affected users and financial institutions.
