WWE's announcement last month that it would acquire Mexico's AAA promotion sent ripples through the wrestling industry. The deal, which is pending necessary approvals before it is finalized, could reshape talent landscapes between the two companies.
AAA CEO Dorian Roldan outlined potential benefits of the acquisition, citing access to WWE contracted stars with Latin backgrounds as a way to boost television viewership and create a pathway for future financial growth, including television deals, sponsorships, and ticketing.
Among the wrestlers Roldan mentioned as potential talent for AAA through this partnership were Rey & Dominik Mysterio, Penta, Rey Fenix, Andrade, Angel, and Berto. The inclusion of "Berto" in discussions about accessing WWE talent has fueled speculation regarding the possible involvement of former WWE champion Alberto Del Rio, who is frequently referred to by that name.
The acquisition agreement requires additional approvals before it can be fully completed, a process anticipated to conclude later this year.
Competitor promotion CMLL in Mexico has not publicly addressed the sale of AAA. However, CMLL's recent broadcasts have emphasized the company's identity as "100% Mexicana" and the authenticity of its traditional lucha libre style.
Amid the pending acquisition, talent exchanges are already occurring. Rey Mysterio made an appearance on AAA programming recently. There are also discussions about potential appearances by WWE stars at AAA's TripleMania Regia event scheduled for June 15 in Monterrey.
Several performers currently on the WWE roster have strong ties to AAA, including Rey Fenix, Penta, and Dragon Lee.
