Lou Lamoriello is out as president and general manager of the New York Islanders, the team announced Tuesday. His contract will not be renewed after seven years leading the franchise.
The team said Operating Partner John Collins will head the search for the Islanders' next general manager. The announcement marks the end of an era for the club under the Hall of Fame executive.
Lamoriello, 82, took over in 2018 and guided the Islanders to the playoffs five times during his tenure. This included reaching the Eastern Conference final in the 2020 playoff bubble.
However, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs this season. The Islanders have not advanced beyond the first round since 2021 and missed the postseason in two of the last four years, performance reflected in their Nhl Scores and final standings.
Lamoriello's career includes a lengthy and successful run as president and general manager of the New Jersey Devils from 1987 to 2015. During that time, the Devils won the Stanley Cup three times. He also served as GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs before joining the Islanders.
A respected figure in hockey circles, Lamoriello was known for his traditional approach to managing teams. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builders category.
The Islanders organization acknowledged Lamoriello's contributions since 2018.
"The Islanders extend a heartfelt thank you to Lou Lamoriello for his extraordinary commitment over the past seven years," the team said in a statement. "His dedication to the team is in line with his Hall of Fame career."
