Calvin Pickard took over the starting goaltender duties for the Edmonton Oilers during their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings, helping the team overcome an early deficit. The Oilers lost the first two games with Stuart Skinner in net before turning to Pickard for Game 3.

The coaching change followed Skinner allowing 11 goals in the opening two contests. Since Pickard entered the lineup, the Oilers have won three consecutive games, taking a 3-2 series lead.

In his three starts, Pickard has posted a 3-0 record. He made 24 saves in a Game 3 victory and 38 saves in a Game 4 overtime win. His most recent outing saw him stop 21 shots in a Game 5 win on the road.

The decision to rely on the veteran netminder marked a departure from the team's initial plan, which centered around preparing Skinner for a deep playoff run. Coach Kris Knoblauch cited Skinner's inconsistent play as a reason for the change.

Pickard's career path has often involved a backup or mentorship role. He was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 expansion draft but was later claimed off waivers, leading to years moving between the minor leagues and brief NHL stints.

Despite the challenges, those around Pickard note his mental resilience. His personal goalie coach, Paul Fricker, described him as a chameleon who adapts to situations with a positive attitude.

Pickard's style has drawn discussion, characterized by Fricker as an "in-betweener" caught between goaltending eras. However, Knoblauch pointed to Pickard's ability to read the game and his athleticism as strengths.

Pickard previously appeared in the playoffs for the Oilers in 2024, providing relief for Skinner in a second-round series against Vancouver. This season, he posted 22 wins in the regular season and earned the team's nomination for the Masterton Trophy, awarded for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Oilers players have voiced support for Pickard. Winger Zach Hyman noted that Pickard making necessary saves instills confidence. Evander Kane added that Pickard has stayed ready and performed well in the high-pressure playoff environment.

Pickard stated his focus remains on contributing to the team's success. "I just want to go out and do my job," he said.
