Trumain Carroll has been appointed the new director of football sports performance at the University of Southern California. The university announced the hire today.

Carroll comes to USC from Kansas State, where he served as the football strength coach. Reports indicated he was well-regarded by players and coaches during his time with the Wildcats, beginning in 2021.

His arrival follows the departure of Bennie Wylie, who previously held the position. Wylie was fired by USC in late April.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley commented on the hiring. "Coach Carroll is an accomplished strength and conditioning professional who has consistently trained his teams to compete at the highest level," Riley said in a statement. "His ability to develop players with an emphasis on a strong team culture has been evident throughout his career. He will have a tremendous impact on our program. We're excited to welcome Trumain and his family to USC."

USC football had reportedly considered other candidates for the opening before Carroll's hiring, including Indiana's Derek Owings, who ultimately remained with the Hoosiers.

Carroll's coaching background includes stints as the director of strength and conditioning at several universities. His resume includes roles at South Florida, Arkansas, Southern Methodist University, South Carolina State, and Missouri-Kansas City. He also worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Oklahoma State from 2013 to 2014, marking his second tenure with the Cowboys program where he first started coaching in 2006.

Before his coaching career, Carroll played defensive end at Oklahoma State for five seasons. He was part of Cowboy teams that earned three consecutive bowl appearances, including a victory in the 2002 Houston Bowl.

Carroll holds multiple certifications in the field. He earned his Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification in 2007, USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Certification in 2008, and his Master Strength and Conditioning Certification in 2020. He completed his bachelor's degree at Oklahoma State in 2005.
