Austin Peay State University announced the passing of senior football player William Hardrick late Tuesday night. Hardrick, who joined the university's football program recently, was a resident of Adamsville, Alabama.
University officials released statements Wednesday mourning Hardrick's death. He transferred to Austin Peay this offseason after playing at two other institutions.
Hardrick previously attended Mississippi State from 2021 to 2022 and Miami University from 2023 to 2024. At Minor High School in Adamsville, Alabama, he played both wide receiver and defensive back positions.
APSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison expressed sorrow over the loss. "We are truly saddened by the passing of William Hardrick, a new member of our football program and the Austin Peay family," Harrison said in an official statement.
APSU football coach Jeff Faris described Hardrick's impact. "William Hardrick was an exceptional young man, and our team is heartbroken by his loss," Faris said. "He made everyone around him better and has made a real impact both on and off the field."
The university's athletics department confirmed the death occurred on the night of May 6, 2025, according to a release on ClarksvilleNow.com.
Clarksville media also reported on the news Wednesday morning, confirming Hardrick was a senior when he died. Officials stated they would provide no further comment at this time, focusing on supporting his family and teammates.
"We lift up the Hardrick family in prayer as we grieve this tragic loss with them," Coach Faris said.
