University of Florida Gators defensive back Dijon Johnson was arrested May 2 in his hometown of Tampa on felony and misdemeanor charges, according to records from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities charged the 21-year-old player with possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, a second-degree felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony. He also faces misdemeanor counts of possession of cannabis less than 20 grams and resisting an officer without violence.

Tampa Police arrested Johnson just before midnight on May 2. He was booked into custody early May 3 and released on May 4 after posting a surety bond totaling $8,500. Judge Thomas N. Palermo set the bond amount.

The university released a statement acknowledging the situation involving Dijon Johnson. The statement indicated the school is gathering facts and monitoring the legal process.

Johnson, a junior, is preparing for his third season with the Florida team. He appeared in 13 games in 2024, starting five of them, primarily at cornerback. He recorded 27 total tackles, including two for loss, and defended two passes.

He was expected to compete for a starting role in 2025 after ending last season as a starter for the final four games. Johnson underwent offseason shoulder surgery and was limited during spring practice, according to reports from Swamp 247.

Coming out of Wharton High School in Tampa, Johnson was rated a four-star recruit by recruiting services.

Concerning the arrest, coach Billy Napier issued a statement.

"We are aware of the situation of Dijon Johnson," Napier said in a statement provided by the university said. "We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative processes."
