Boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez has offered a bold prediction for the anticipated super fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, stating Alvarez will win by knockout. The potential bout, reportedly eyed for September, features two of the sport's most recognized fighters.
Alvarez is scheduled to face William Scull this weekend in Saudi Arabia. That fight is viewed as a precursor to the planned showdown with Crawford later in the year.
Chavez believes the size difference will be the determining factor. Crawford, best known for his accomplishments at welterweight, moved up to super welterweight for his last fight, while Canelo has been comfortable at super middleweight for years.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Chavez said the matchup favors the naturally bigger man. "It's really an uneven fight," Chavez stated. "Crawford is a great fighter, but Canelo is out of his league. Crawford is going for the money, and Canelo is going to knock him out."
The WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has expressed support for the potential fight, calling it "monumental." He noted that Alvarez must first get past Scull.
Crawford's last ring appearance was in August 2024, a unanimous decision win against Israil Madrimov for a super welterweight title. He holds a perfect professional record of 41-0.
Some observers believe that Canelo's performance against Scull could influence public perception of the Crawford fight. A dominant win might reinforce the belief that Canelo's size advantage would be too much for Crawford.
Another potential future opponent for Canelo is Chris Eubank Jr. Promoter Ben Shalom reaffirmed that a fight with Canelo remains a goal for Eubank Jr.
Turki Alalshikh reportedly told Sky Sports that Eubank Jr could get an opportunity to face Canelo in early 2026 if he was successful in his recent bout.
While the exact date for Alvarez vs. Crawford remains unconfirmed, it is expected to land around Mexico’s Independence Day weekend in September.
