New York placed second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right oblique strain. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.
Chisholm suffered the injury on a swing during Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. He remained in the game briefly before being replaced.
Infielder Jorbit Vivas was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Chisholm's place on the active roster. Vivas has put up strong numbers at Triple A this season, hitting .319 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 26 games.
Vivas has been called up multiple times in his MLB career, but has not yet played in a game. He has played both second base and third base in Triple-A this season.
Oswald Peraza will likely handle many of the starts at second base in Chisholm's absence. Peraza has hit .206 with one home run this season. Other options include Oswaldo Cabrera and Pablo Reyes.
Chisholm has hit seven home runs this season but has struggled for consistency at the plate. He is hitting .181 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .714 OPS through Friday. He has struck out 39 times in 105 at-bats.
The second baseman initially did not believe the injury was serious. He said he thought he might miss just a few days.
The Yankees have several other players on the injured list, including Giancarlo Stanton, Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil. Veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu also received a cortisone shot recently for a hip issue as he attempts to return from a calf strain.
