The St. Louis Cardinals completed a doubleheader sweep of the New York Mets on Saturday, winning the second game 5-4 at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals' victories ended a nine-game losing streak against the Mets.
In the second game, the Cardinals overcame a two-run deficit. The winning run scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Victor Scott II hit a double that allowed Yohel Pozo to score.
Cardinals pitching held the Mets scoreless over the final three innings. Michael McGreevy entered in the fourth inning and pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing only one hit.
The Mets had taken a 4-2 lead in the third inning following a two-run single by Starling Marte and an RBI single by Francisco Alvarez. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor also contributed hits in the rally. The Mets stranded 10 runners in the game.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the second inning on a home run by Alec Burleson. They tied the game in the third with hits from Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras.
Defensive plays aided the Cardinals' effort in the Mets vs Cardinals contest. Victor Scott II made a leaping catch at the center field wall to rob a home run from Juan Soto in the fourth inning. Nolan Arenado made a catch in foul territory in the eighth inning..Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado commented on Scott's defensive play after the game. "That was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen,” Arenado said.
The Cardinals won the first game of the doubleheader 6-5. The Mets travel to Arizona for a three-game series starting Sunday.
