Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for inappropriate actions directed at fans during a game against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

Major League Baseball announced the disciplinary action Friday. Pham was scheduled to serve the suspension during the Pirates' game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the penalty has been held in abeyance as he has elected to appeal the decision.

The incident took place in the fifth inning of the game in Anaheim. A fan reached over the wall and touched Pham's back as he was fielding a ball hit down the left field line.

Pham immediately turned toward the stands after being touched. Witnesses and video show he made an obscene gesture with his hand towards the fans.

After returning to his position, Pham reportedly continued to interact with the fan and made another gesture, according to some reports.

The Pirates won the game against the Angels 3-0. During that contest, Pirates shortstop O'Neil Cruz hit a long home run earlier in the game.

Pham, a 12-year veteran, is in his first season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is currently batting .184 with six runs batted in over 23 games.

The outfielder has a history of confrontational moments during his career. He previously made comments about being prepared for physical altercations.

The suspension stems directly from the interaction with the fan from the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.
