BOSTON The Red Sox defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 Monday in their annual [Patriots Day] game, held during the city's celebrated marathon events. The early start time presented unique logistical considerations for players.
Starting pitcher Walker Buehler made a unique adjustment to prepare for the early morning game at Fenway Park. Instead of commuting from his home, he chose to stayed at a hotel near the ballpark Sunday night.
Buehler explained the decision allowed him to avoid potential road closures and traffic delays associated with the Boston Marathon route. His wife and daughter joined him at the hotel, maintaining a familiar routine before the 11 a.m. first pitch. His chiropractor also secured a room nearby.
Buehler delivered a strong performance on the mound. After navigating a challenging first inning, he settled in and pitched seven innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits while striking out nine. It was Buehler’s longest start since 2022 as he continues his return from injury in his first year with the Red Sox.
The Red Sox offense provided support. Rob Refsnyder hit a home run, Trevor Story drove in a run with a single, and rookie Kristian Campbell delivered a key two-run single to build the lead.
Aroldis Chapman pitched the eighth inning, allowing a home run, but secured the final outs. Justin Slaten finished the game in the ninth, earning his third save.
The victory secured a series win for the Red Sox, capping off the unique holiday contest with a positive result.
