The Detroit Tigers' recent power streak ended Saturday, stymied by Los Angeles Angels veteran pitcher Kyle Hendricks in a 5-2 loss at Angel Stadium.
Hendricks held the Tigers offense in check for seven innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while generating ground ball outs. The performance was a turnaround for the right-hander who had struggled in recent starts for the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels scored first in the second inning on an unearned run. A fly ball hit by Kyren Paris fell to the grass after center fielder Riley Greene and right fielder Kerry Carpenter had a miscommunication and collided. Travis d'Arnaud scored on the play.
Tigers starter Jack Flaherty navigated the Angels lineup through five innings, giving up only the unearned run. However, the Angels broke through in the sixth inning.
Flaherty allowed a pair of singles and walked Travis d'Arnaud to load the bases. Luis Rengifo singled to center, driving in two runs. Kyren Paris followed with another single that scored two more, ending Flaherty's night. The Angels scored a fifth run off reliever Beau Brieske before the inning concluded.
The Tigers, known for late-inning scoring, including recent games where they erupted for four homers in the ninth inning, attempted a comeback against the Angels bullpen.
Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his 10th of the season.
In the ninth, Andy Ibáñez singled and Gleyber Torres doubled. Riley Greene drove in a run with a ground out. However, Kenley Jansen, who struggled the previous night, entered the game and secured the final outs to earn the save for Los Angeles.
The Tigers also activated right-handed reliever Beau Brieske off the injured list before the game.
Manager A.J. Hinch commented on Brieske's return, saying, "So with fresh arm, given how much we've used our pen, specifically the right side of our pen in these last couple series, it's a nice boost."
Brieske pitched a third of an inning in the sixth, allowing a hit but no runs. Right-hander Tyler Owens was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
