New York Mets left fielder Jesse Winker departed the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday in the fourth inning. The team reported he experienced right side discomfort.
The injury occurred while Winker was playing left field. He had caught a sacrifice fly in the third inning and attempted a throw toward home plate.
Sunday marked the first time Winker started in the field this season. His previous 18 starts came as the team's designated hitter.
Prior to Sunday's game, Jesse Winker held a .239 batting average with a .738 OPS. He had recorded one home run and nine RBI through 23 games.
Following Winker's exit, the Mets adjusted their defensive alignment. Second baseman Jeff McNeil moved to left field, Luisangel Acuna shifted from third base to second, and Mark Vientos entered the game at third base.
The New York Mets outfield depth has already been tested this season with outfielder Jose Siri on the injured list. Other options on the roster include Brandon Nimmo and Jose Azocar.
Staring Marte has typically shared the designated hitter duties with Winker. Should Winker miss time, Marte may receive the majority of DH at-bats. Nimmo is also a left-handed option for the role.
