New York Mets reliever Danny Young requires Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the 2025 season, a person familiar with the situation confirmed Sunday. The left-handed pitcher was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Team doctors for the New York Mets recommended the procedure after Young experienced soreness related to a left elbow sprain. He had been placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday.

The decision followed consultation with additional medical professionals. Young is expected to also miss time during the 2026 season while recovering.

Young, who turns 31 this month, appeared in 10 games for the Mets this season. He recorded a 4.32 ERA with 13 strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings.

He had emerged as a contributor in the Mets' bullpen last year, becoming a primary left-handed option late in the season. This year, he served as the second lefty behind A.J. Minter.

Minter is currently sidelined with a lat strain, which he sustained in April. Surgery remains a possibility for Minter, which could also end his season.

The Mets recently re-signed Brooks Raley, another left-hander who required Tommy John surgery in May of last year. Raley could potentially rejoin the bullpen by the second half of this season.

The team is receiving a different bullpen reinforcement Sunday with the return of Dedniel Núñez. Núñez, who had a strong performance for the Mets in 2024 before an elbow injury ended his year, began this season in Triple A working back from the issue. He is being recalled for the second game of the Mets' doubleheader in St. Louis.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented Sunday that the team awaited a decision from Young regarding the next steps in his recovery.

Speaking Wednesday before the surgery decision was finalized, Young acknowledged the timing of the injury was unfavorable.
