Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo homered Friday night, helping the Mets beat the Cardenales 9-3. The victory in St. Louis marked the Mets' ninth win in a row against the Cardenales and prevented New York from suffering its first three-game losing streak this season.

Francisco Álvarez added three hits and three runs batted in for the Mets. The New York offense totaled 17 hits in the game, its second-highest hit total of the season.

Alonso gave the Mets a 4-3 lead with his eighth home run, a two-run drive off Sonny Gray. The hit came on a 0-2 off-speed pitch and traveled 417 feet to center field.

Nimmo hit a solo home run in the seventh inning against John King, his seventh homer of the year. Nimmo reached base safely in all five plate appearances, going 3 for 3 with two walks and scoring three runs.

Clay Holmes earned the win, allowing three runs and eight hits over six innings. He was hit in the right ankle by a ground ball in the second inning but stayed in the game.

Gray took the loss for the Cardenales. He allowed five runs — four earned — nine hits, and three walks in 4 1/3 innings, his shortest outing this season. Gray had been 4-0 in his career against the Mets before Friday.

The Mets swept a four-game series against the Cardenales at home last month. The team's previous best streak against the Cardinals franchise was eight games in 1986.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the Mets are scheduled to send right-hander Tylor Megill (3-2, 1.74 ERA) to the mound as they aim for a 10th consecutive victory against St. Louis. The Cardenales plan to counter with right-hander Erick Fedde (1-3, 4.68 ERA).

Among other Mets hitters, Juan Soto and Jesse Winker each had two hits. Masyn Winn had a 3-for-4 performance for the Cardenales.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza discussed Nimmo's recent play. "He's been focused," Mendoza said after Friday's win. "Again, a good hitter that is finally getting results. I don't think he is doing anything different. Now, the balls are dropping."
