Pitcher Sauryn Lao was sent back to the Tacoma Rainiers in Triple-A several days after being designated for assignment. The right-hander cleared outright waivers and was assigned to the minor league affiliate.
Players with less than three years of MLB service time and no prior outright assignments do not have the option to elect free agency after clearing waivers. Lao falls into this category and will remain with the organization, providing pitching depth.
The roster move follows Lao's recent Major League debut. He appeared in one game for the club after being called up due to bullpen needs.
In his debut performance, Sauryn Lao pitched 1 2/3 innings. He recorded three strikeouts and allowed one unearned run on three hits.
Before his promotion, Lao had made four starts for the Tacoma Rainiers this season. His numbers included nine strikeouts across 12 innings pitched. He held opposing batters to a .227 average and posted a 0.92 WHIP.
The pitcher originally signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He spent time in another organization before signing a minor league contract in December 2024. Lao converted to pitching in 2023 after previously playing shortstop.
Lao's outright to Tacoma occurred on Friday, three days after his DFA on April 30. Other roster adjustments included placing Luke Raley on the injured list and selecting outfielder Rhylan Thomas from the Rainiers on the same day Lao was designated for assignment.
His performance in Triple-A this season could make him an option for the Major League club again later in the year, depending on team needs.
