Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts offered recent comments on Mookie Betts' defense at shortstop. Betts, primarily an outfielder for most of his career, moved to the infield position starting in the 2023 season.

The move came as the Dodgers looked to fill a need at shortstop. Betts, known for his versatility and baseball intelligence, took on the role despite limited experience at the position dating back to his time in the minor leagues.

Roberts noted improvement in Betts' play at shortstop. He contrasted current performance with observations from the previous season.

"Last year, there was a lot of indecisiveness with reading hops and making throws from different arm angles," Roberts said, via reporting from Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation. "Now everything is more fluid."

Betts won multiple Gold Gloves as a right fielder during his career with both the Boston Red Sox and the Dodgers. The transition to shortstop presented a different set of defensive challenges.

Analytics show progress in Betts' fielding. His Fielding Run Value, according to Baseball Savant, has reportedly moved into positive territory this season after negative values in the prior two years.

Roberts indicated confidence in Betts handling the position. The team has continued to deploy him there through the early part of the 2025 season.

Team depth allows for flexibility with Betts' positioning, but he has played most of his games at shortstop this season.

The Dodgers remain near the top of their division standings. Betts' continued presence at shortstop appears to be part of the club's plan.

Roberts stated his view of Betts at the position. "I see him as a Major League shortstop," Roberts added.
