Chicago Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga departed Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers after suffering a left hamstring strain. The injury occurred in the sixth inning as he ran toward first base on a potential double play.
Imanaga grabbed the back of his left leg following the play. He was checked by Cubs officials and removed from the game, walking off the field with a limp.
At the time of Imanaga's exit, the game was scoreless. The Brewers subsequently scored four runs in the inning against the Cubs bullpen and went on to win the game 4-0.
The injury follows Imanaga's previous start on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he exited early due to leg cramps in both quadriceps. The team had not considered that issue serious, and he remained on his regular schedule for Sunday's start.
Losing Imanaga, who had been a steady performer, adds another challenge for the Chicago rotation. The team previously lost rotation leader Justin Steele for the season due to elbow surgery. Right-hander Javier Assad also sustained a setback in his comeback from a left oblique strain.
Milwaukee pitcher Freddy Peralta threw six scoreless innings for the Brewers, striking out seven to earn the win. Caleb Durbin hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to help secure the victory.
Across the league, other teams were in action, including the St. Louis Cardinals playing their Cardinals Game Today. The focus for Chicago, however, remains on assessing the severity of Imanaga's hamstring injury.
The Cubs return home for a series against the San Francisco Giants. The Brewers are set to open a home series against the Houston Astros.
