U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said announcements regarding the expansion of the Abraham Accords are expected shortly. Speaking at an Independence Day event at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Witkoff expressed optimism for continued advancements in the normalization agreements by next year.
The envoy stated that President Trump is working on expanding the Abraham Accords, which currently include normalization agreements between Israel and Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco. Witkoff's remarks come days before President Trump's scheduled visits to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Witkoff also addressed ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. He stated he is in almost daily contact with the mediators, Egypt and Qatar, as well as with Israeli officials, expressing hope for progress on a deal.
He recalled being present for the release of female IDF soldiers, describing it as an emotional moment and stating he sang "Am Israel Chai" with them. Witkoff noted the celebration of Israel's Independence Day was bittersweet with hostages still captive.
The envoy reiterated a firm stance on regional security, stating that Iran will not be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon. He indicated that diplomatic efforts are underway regarding nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran, with hopes of moving in a positive direction and coordinating a fourth round of discussions.
Witkoff also touched on broader regional challenges, including the situations in Syria and Lebanon. He stated these discussions are part of wider diplomatic initiatives currently in progress.
He spoke about meeting an Israeli soldier severely wounded in Gaza at the event, noting the soldier's sacrifice. Witkoff praised Israel's resilience in facing external threats.
In concluding remarks, Steve Witkoff emphasized the need for unity within Israel. He urged Israelis to choose unity over division and vision over discord, stating that this choice will lead to a brighter future for the nation.
