A Homewood-Flossmoor High School senior died Sunday following a single-vehicle crash on the Bishop Ford Freeway, according to school officials and Illinois State Police.
The fatal crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on the Sibley Boulevard ramp leading to I-94 northbound in Calumet City.
Illinois State Police responded to the scene. The single occupant of the vehicle was taken to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Homewood-Flossmoor High School identified the victim as Tom Mya Lyons, an 18-year-old senior at the school.
State police said Lyons was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver was transported to a hospital with injuries. Further details regarding the driver's identity or the circumstances of the crash were not immediately available. The accident is under investigation.
The crash took place hours after the school's prom, "A Night of Enchanted Elegance," concluded at midnight Saturday evening. Details about the event were available in school materials, including a prom FAQ document. Local law enforcement agencies maintain information on Crime & Safety incidents.
School officials informed families and staff Sunday about the death of Tom Mya Lyons. Grief counseling and support services are being provided to students and staff at the high school.
"With permission from Tom Mya's mother, we are sharing this news with the HF family to assure you are aware of this tragic loss as well as the support available for students and staff," Superintendent Dr. Scott Wakeley and Principal Dr. Clinton Alexander wrote in a message to the school community.
Homewood-Flossmoor serves students from several south suburban communities in the Homewood area. The school year is nearing its conclusion, with graduation ceremonies approaching. A fatal crash on a major freeway prompts review of local traffic safety concerns.
Wakeley and Alexander added, "We extend our deepest condolences to Tom Mya's family. Our hearts go out to them as they cope with this tragic loss. It is in difficult times like this that the HF family comes together to support each other. We are here for you."
