P-pop group BINI issued an apology late Thursday following public reaction to a viral video clip circulating online. The video showed some group members with friends during a private moment where inappropriate jokes referencing a minor were reportedly made.
The eight-member group acknowledged responsibility for the incident. The clip, which surfaced on social media, depicted a sexually suggestive scenario involving two male friends of the group, Dancer Shawn Castro and GAT Member Ethan David. Voices heard off-camera, reportedly belonging to BINI members, were heard referencing a 13-year-old in relation to the scenario.
Members Jhoanna was present in the video, while Stacey and Colet were identified by fans as being among the voices heard. The group's statement listed Colet, Stacey, and Jhoanna together, potentially confirming their presence or involvement.
In their statement, BINI members Mikha, Sheena, Aiah, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Colet, and Jhoanna stated, "We know that the past couple of days have been triggering and disappointing for all of you. Sincerely, we understand where all of those feelings are coming from." They described the video as showing a "private moment of us with friends" and asserted they did not intend to cause hurt.
The group added, "We offer no excuse for our actions, reactions, and choice of words. We take full accountability." The statement included the phrase "Nagkamali kami," which translates to "We made a mistake."
BINI apologized to their fans, known as BLOOMs, their families, and the general public. Fans had expressed disappointment online, urging the group to address the matter and accusing those involved of making light of sensitive topics.
Both Dancer Shawn Castro and GAT Member Ethan David have also issued separate apologies regarding their involvement in the video. Castro described the video as taken out of context but admitted error, stating they became too comfortable and that the joke was inappropriate, especially considering how it appeared in the clip.
David took full responsibility for his part in the incident. He acknowledged letting people down and expressed respect for all individuals, particularly women. David stated that his actions in the video did not reflect his values and promised the incident would not happen again.
Formed through ABS-CBN's Star Hunt Academy, BINI debuted in June 2021. The group is known for popular songs and is preparing for an upcoming world tour.
"We humbly ask for a chance to reflect on and learn from our mistakes and continue to work on becoming better versions of ourselves."
