Singer Katy Perry stated the "online world" attempted to turn her into a "human Piñata" following recent backlash related to a space trip and her current music. Perry made the comment in response to fans who purchased a Times Square billboard to show support.

The pop star faced criticism after participating in Blue Origin's first all-female crew space flight earlier this month. Reactions online included mockery of her behavior after landing, such as kissing the ground and expressing feelings of being connected to love. Fast food chain Wendy's also posted a message questioning the flight.

Negative sentiment has since extended to the Katy Perry Tour, which began in Mexico on April 23. Online comments have targeted her dance moves and performances.

Perry described the internet as a "dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed" individuals when addressing the criticism. She reassured her supporters, known as "katycats," that she is doing well and focusing on real-world interactions.

Fans from around the world reportedly contributed funds for the billboard message in New York, which expressed pride in her journey and declared boundless support. Perry saw footage of the billboard shared by a fan page.

Commentators note that while social media contributes to negativity, other factors may influence public perception. Some point to a pattern of attempted reinventions that haven't resonated, contrasting with the rise of artists known for greater authenticity. Marie Claire Australia editor Georgie McCourt suggested misogyny plays a role, noting less intense reactions to male celebrities taking similar spaceflights.

Perry's recent single, Woman's World, drew criticism for its shallow lyrics and association with a problematic collaborators, failing to chart strongly. This followed a poorly received album. In contrast, her Las Vegas residency saw commercial and critical success.

The Lifetimes Tour is scheduled to continue through December, with stops planned across the US, Canada, South America, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. Singer Lily Allen apologised this week for past negative remarks about Perry, stating there was no need to join online criticism.

Perry expressed gratitude to her fans. "I love you guys and have grown up together with you and am so excited to see you all over the world this year," Perry wrote. "Please know I am OK."
