Grammy-winning artist, actress, and entrepreneur Karol G is opening up about personal struggles and career milestones in a new Netflix documentary released May 8. The film, titled "Mañana Fue Bonito" (Tomorrow Was Beautiful), chronicles her journey from Medellín, Colombia, to achieving global stardom.
The documentary explores themes of authenticity, vulnerability, and resilience, offering viewers insight into her experiences both on and off stage. It follows her professional rise, including the historic global stadium tour where she became the first Latina artist to headline such a tour.
A significant focus of the film is the period surrounding her 2023 album, "Mañana Será Bonito," which dealt with the realities of heartbreak. The artist discusses healing publicly through her music and finding connection with fans who related to her experiences.
The documentary also addresses her current relationship with fellow Colombian musician Feid. She describes their connection as a healthy relationship, noting his understanding of her career and calling him a "special soul."
One of the most personal revelations in the film involves the reason she considered quitting music over a decade ago. Karol G recounts an incident at age 16 where a manager made inappropriate advances, tying her dreams to a condition she refused. This experience left her feeling disillusioned and contributed to her decision to briefly step away from music in 2012.
Sharing this past trauma was difficult, she acknowledges, but important for empowering other women in the industry. She observed a pattern of similar experiences among female colleagues and wanted to offer her story as encouragement for others to speak up and leave uncomfortable situations.
The documentary arrives as the singer has also made a notable personal change, returning to her natural brown hair color after phases with blue, red, and pink shades associated with different album eras. She indicated the change reflects a desire to embrace her "most natural and original and authentic and genuine version of myself."
