Alex Garland is set to direct a film adaptation of the popular video game Elden Ring for studio A24, according to a recent report. The project is expected to begin filming in 2026.
The news comes after the release of Garland's latest film, Warfare, which he co-directed. The upcoming Elden Ring project continues a partnership between Garland and A24. The move follows earlier statements from the director suggesting he might step back from directing, as noted by another news outlet.
Elden Ring is a role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was released in February 2022 across multiple platforms. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and Yui Tanimura. George R. R. Martin contributed to the game's writing.
The game won "Game of the Year" at the 2022 Game Awards, and its expansion pack, Shadow of the Erdtree, received a nomination for the same award in 2024. The story centers on the Tarnished, summoned to the Lands Between to restore the shattered Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.
Alex Garland is known for his work as a writer on films like 28 Days Later and his directorial efforts, including Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War.
His upcoming projects also include new entries in the 28 Days Later franchise, titled 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, both of which he wrote and produced. The decision to direct the Elden Ring film indicates Garland will remain active in filmmaking.
Warfare, the recent film from Garland and co-director Ray Mendoza, is described as an intense portrayal of frontline combat based on the memories of soldiers. The movie is currently available to stream on premium video-on-demand platforms. You can view the trailer.
