Anticipation builds for the annual Costume Institute Benefit, widely known as the Met Gala, scheduled for the first Monday in May. This year's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," highlights the historical use of fashion by Black men.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's accompanying exhibition and the Met Gala draw inspiration from Monica L. Miller's 2009 book, "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity." The exhibit traces the tradition from slavery through the 21st century.

Colman Domingo, a prominent figure embracing Black dandyism, will co-chair this year's Met Gala.

Other announced co-chairs include Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary co-chair.

While many notable figures plan to attend, reports indicate that Blake Lively will not be present this year, having last attended as a co-chair in 2022. Will Blake Lively attend the 2025 Met Gala?

The exhibition explores the concept of "ownership," contrasting the historical reality of being owned with the act of "owning it" through style. Miller hopes the event prompts attendees and viewers to consider the historical context of the styles on display.

"It’s about understanding that the present moment is always informed by both history and our aspirations," Miller said.
