Veteran filmmaker George Lucas attended the Met Gala Monday, opting for an understated look that included a pair of inexpensive running shoes. The creator, known for the "Star Wars" franchise and films like "THX 1138," walked the red carpet in New York with his wife, Mellody Hobson.

While other attendees showcased elaborate fashion adhering to the year's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, Mr. Lucas wore a simple three-button navy suit. His footwear drew particular notice: a pair of black Nike Flex Experience RN 7s that retailed for approximately $60 when released in 2019.

The Met Gala, typically a black-tie affair, saw some guests incorporate sneakers, but Mr. Lucas's choice of a widely available, older running model contrasted sharply with the high-fashion environment. The Nike shoe is part of a budget-friendly line that is now on its 12th incarnation.

Reports suggested Mr. Lucas may have purchased multiple pairs of the shoes years ago, preferring the comfort and fit of the older model which is no longer widely sold. This preference aligns with his reputation for maintaining personal autonomy, a trait seen in his career decisions, such as self-financing the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy.

His wife, Mellody Hobson, leaned into the evening's theme with a bejeweled tweed suit adorned with brooches and chains. Their appearances together often show Mr. Lucas taking a less prominent role, appearing comfortable outside the spotlight.

The couple attended to support friend Lewis Hamilton, a co-chair for the event. Mr. Hamilton was instrumental in setting the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, based on Monica L. Miller’s book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity." The dress code was "Tailored for You."

Social media users commented on Mr. Lucas's practical footwear choice, comparing it to typical "dad shoes" and noting the contrast with the event's fashion expectations. Some users referenced his famously casual on-set attire, which often includes flannel shirts and white sneakers, occasionally mentioning brands like New Balance.

Mr. Lucas sold Star Wars and Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.
