Jury selection began Monday in the federal trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs in New York City. The music mogul faces charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, allegations he has denied.
During proceedings on May 5, 2025, Combs made a rare statement in court to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian. The statement came after his defense attorney requested a brief pause.
"I’m sorry, your honor, I’m a little nervous today," Combs told the judge, according to reports.
Prospective jurors were questioned during voir dire about their potential biases. The process involved reading a list of names and asking if jurors recognized them. The list included celebrities like Mike Myers, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Michael B. Jordan, Lauren London, and Michelle Williams, among others.Questions also covered jurors' opinions on wealthy individuals, the hip-hop rap music industry, and beliefs regarding infidelity. The goal was to identify individuals who could remain impartial based solely on evidence.
Combs stands accused of engaging in or attempting to engage in sex trafficking, obstructing justice, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, and bribery. Prosecutors allege he used his business empire's resources and influence to operate a criminal enterprise over decades. Combs has denied the charges and reportedly rejected a plea deal before trial.
His former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, who previously accused Combs of sexual and physical assault in a settled lawsuit, is expected to testify using her name during the trial. Her earlier allegations included a claim related to Kid Cudi.
Combs has been held in custody at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. His appearance has reportedly changed, with a gray goatee and hair. He was described in court as wearing a sweater over a white collared shirt and gray slacks. His legal team is led by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos.
Jury selection continued Tuesday. Opening statements are anticipated the week of May 12, with the trial expected to last about eight weeks.
