Smithland Pet & Garden Centers, formerly known as myAgway and Dave's Soda and Pet City, announced Monday the closure of all 13 retail locations across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The company cited persistent inflation, economic challenges, and market competition as factors in the decision to liquidate the business.
Storewide closing sales began Tuesday, May 6, at all locations. Customers can find markdowns on pet supplies, garden products, lawn care, and other items as the company winds down operations. Sales are being conducted in partnership with Hilco Consumer-Retail.
Smithland Pet and Garden Centers have served communities since 1985, offering products for pets, gardening, and backyard living. The company was a destination for expert advice and products ranging from pet food to outdoor furniture.
Seven of the closing locations are in Connecticut: Bethel, Manchester, Middlefield, North Branford, North Haven, Old Saybrook, and Southington. Six stores are in Massachusetts, including Agawam, Hadley, Ludlow, Northampton, Ware, and Westfield. A list of locations is available on the Smithland website.
The liquidation process is expected to conclude by the end of June. A customer appreciation sale is running from May 6 to May 11, offering a 10% discount on non-sale items, coinciding with the annual Mother's Day Sale. This leads into the broader liquidation sales.
Specific terms for the closing sales include all purchases made on or after May 6 being final. Returns for purchases made before May 6 are accepted until May 20 with a receipt. The Smithland Rewards program accrual will end effective May 12.
Payment methods accepted during the closing sales include cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and Smithland Gift Cards. Checks are not accepted starting May 6, and gift cards were not sold after May 5. Store fixtures and equipment will also be available for sale.
CT Gardens, LLC CEO John Atkins stated the company was more than a place to shop. "They've been places where pets were pampered, gardens were grown, wild birds were fed, and neighbors became friends," Atkins said. "We hope you'll stop by, say goodbye, and take advantage of some wonderful savings during this time. Most importantly, we hope you know how deeply thankful we are to serve you over these many years."
