Bethesda Softworks today released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, a modernized version of the popular 2006 role-playing game. The release follows weeks of speculation and internet rumors. Players can now experience Cyrodiil with updated visuals and gameplay features.
The game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass gain access without buying the game outright. Bethesda made the announcement and released the game shortly afterward, a move sometimes called a "shadowdrop."
Developer Virtuos handled the project, using Unreal Engine 5 for a complete visual overhaul. This gives the world a high-resolution look with improved lighting and textures. While using a new engine for graphics, the game maintains elements of the original engine underneath.
Gameplay sees updates too. Leveling character skills features influence from later games like Skyrim. Movement feels more modern, adding a sprint ability after internal developer debate. A new cast of voice actors recorded dialogue for much of the content previously limited by 2006 media size.
All previously released add-ons come with the base game. This includes the large story expansions, Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. Other downloadable content like Fighter's Stronghold and Mehrune's Razor are also part of the standard package.
A Deluxe Edition offers additional content. It features unique digital armor and weapon sets. Players can obtain items like Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon themed gear, including horse armor. The Deluxe Edition also contains a digital artbook and soundtrack app.
The game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on modern consoles. Improvements span character creation, combat animations, sound and visual effects, and in-game menus. The title includes a proper third-person view and new lip sync technology.
Originally launching in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360, followed by PlayStation 3 in 2007, the original Oblivion immersed players in the fantasy province of Cyrodiil. The game centers on preventing a fanatical group from opening gates to the demonic realm of Oblivion.
The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered is available for $49.99. Players can purchase it digitally on console stores and PC platforms. Those with a Game Pass subscription can download it on PC and Xbox today. You can learn more about the sudden launch here.
Todd Howard, Bethesda studio head, stated the goal was retaining the original game's feel. "We want people to feel the way they did then," Howard said. "It's still a game of its time." Preserving the core structure while adding modern polish was a key development focus.
