The Golden State Valkyries have waived second round pick Shyanne Sellers the team announced Saturday.

Sellers, drafted 17th overall out of Maryland, is the first player released from the Golden State Valkyries training camp roster for the WNBA expansion team.

"She picked up everything we asked her to, did everything that we asked," coach Natalie Nakase told reporters. "It's just that I have to choose the best 12 that are going to fit. Doesn't mean it's the most talented, it means it's the best 12."

The 22-year-old guard recovered from a sprained right knee injury sustained in January during her college season and had been medically cleared.

Despite being a second-round selection, some mock drafts had projected Sellers as a potential top-10 pick, leading General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin to call her a "steal" on draft night. Nyanin cited Sellers' versatility as appealing.

The move came as a surprise to some observers given Sellers' skill profile, which includes size and the ability to make 3-point attempts at a respectable percentage during her college career.

The decision is part of the typical process of teams reducing rosters before the regular season begins. WNBA preseason news often includes roster cuts and injury updates.

Players who possess Sellers' combination of shot creation, passing ability at her size, and shooting potential are often viewed as valuable assets in the league.
