The qualifying draw for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, also known as the Rome Open or Italian Open, was released Sunday, setting the initial field for the clay-court tournament. Players will compete for spots in the main draw, which is finalized Monday.
Two players who have won ATP Masters 1000 titles are in the qualifying field. Cameron Norrie, winner at Indian Wells in 2021, and Pablo Carreno Busta, who won Montreal in 2022, are seeking entry into the main event at the Foro Italico. Both men have previously ranked in the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings.
Raphael Collignon of Belgium is the top seed in the qualifying bracket. Kamil Majchrzak holds the second seed. Other players competing include Americans Ethan Quinn and Eliot Spizzirri, along with Dusan Lajovic, a clay-court Masters 1000 finalist in 2019.
The Rome Open women's main draw begins Tuesday, May 6, while the men's main draw starts Wednesday, May 7. Competition continues through finals weekend on May 17-18.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is expected to return to the tour for the first time since winning the Australian Open in January. Sinner agreed to a three-month ban with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) following a positive test last March for a banned steroid.
Sinner's suspension ends May 5. He has maintained he did not act improperly. The agreement with WADA followed an appeal after Sinner was initially cleared.
Novak Djokovic is not competing in Rome, opting to focus on the French Open. Carlos Alcaraz is anticipated to play, though questions regarding his fitness remain after he missed the Madrid Open due to a leg injury.
British players in the main draws include Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Jack Draper, and Jacob Fearnley. Cameron Norrie, Jodie Burrage, and Billy Harris will feature in singles qualifying. Jack Draper reached the final in Madrid.
Reigning singles champions in Rome are Iga Swiatek (WTA) and Alexander Zverev (ATP).
