Arsenal is set to sign midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, completing a deal reportedly worth €60 million ($65 million). The move comes as a setback for Real Madrid, which had also pursued the Spanish player.

Reports indicate Arsenal is prepared to trigger Zubimendi's release clause with Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old midfielder has verbally agreed to personal terms on a long-term contract with the London club. The transfer is expected to be finalized soon.

The Gunners reportedly saw off competition from both Real Madrid and Barcelona to secure the player. Real Madrid had tracked Zubimendi for a considerable time but was hesitant to meet the €60 million valuation, a factor that allowed Arsenal to advance its interest.

Real Madrid's inability to land the player complicates their plans for midfield reinforcement. Martin Zubimendi had been identified by some within the club as a potential addition, with Xabi Alonso linked with an interest in the player.

This development follows news that another midfield target, Florian Wirtz, has reportedly chosen to join Bayern Munich. The potential departure of Luka Modric also adds pressure on Real Madrid to find new options in midfield.

Arsenal technical director Edu and scouting head Jason Ayto were reportedly driving forces behind securing the agreement. While an agreement with the player is said to be in place, some caution remains given past instances where the player's position has reportedly changed.

Zubimendi has featured regularly for La Real this season, appearing in 44 matches across all competitions. He has recorded two goals and two assists during the 2024-25 campaign.

The fee equates to roughly £51 million or $68 million at current exchange rates. Real Sociedad has maintained they would not negotiate a transfer fee below the release clause value.
