Mike Williams, the wide receiver who recently returned to the Los Angeles Chargers, expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with quarterback Justin Herbert during the team's voluntary offseason workouts this week.
Williams spent the first seven seasons of his professional career with the Chargers before playing elsewhere for one year. He is now back with the Los Angeles team.
Despite recent injury concerns and his age, the Chargers are hoping Williams can rebuild the chemistry he previously shared with Justin Herbert.
Both players were present at the voluntary workouts that began earlier this week. Williams shared his thoughts on playing with Herbert again.
"I'm excited just to get back with him, get on the field and start gaining that connection back and making plays again," Williams said in comments widely reported, including by Sports Illustrated.
Their past collaboration produced results. Over four seasons together with Justin Herbert as quarterback, Williams caught 187 passes for 2,797 yards and 18 touchdowns in 44 games.
That connection resulted in 19 touchdowns between them in four seasons.
While regaining their previous rhythm may take time, their history suggests the potential for successful plays, especially considering Williams' height advantage in the end zone.
Williams became a fan favorite during his first stint with the Chargers after being selected seventh overall in the 2017 draft. Supporters hope he can recapture that spark with Justin Herbert.
