Veteran running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Nick Chubb are among experienced players seeking teams following the first day of the 2025 NFL Draft. While teams used early picks on rookie talent, some veterans remain available to fill roster needs.

Ezekiel Elliott, a former Pro Bowler who led the NFL in rushing in two of his first three seasons, is a free agent. Speculation centers on a potential return to the Dallas Cowboys, where he spent the majority of his career.

Elliott played the 2023 season with the New England Patriots. In 15 games, including two starts, he recorded 226 rushing yards with a career-low average of 3.1 yards per carry and three touchdowns.

Despite his recent production decline, a reunion with the Cowboys could offer benefits. Elliott is familiar with quarterback Dak Prescott and the team environment. He could potentially take on a lesser role, providing depth to a running back group that has openings after Rico Dowdle signed elsewhere.

According to reports, Elliott could fill a need as a short-yardage or goal-line option.

Similarly, Nick Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowler, is also looking for a team. Injuries have impacted his availability in recent seasons, limiting him to two games in 2023 and eight games in 2024.

Possible destinations for Nick Chubb include a return to the Cleveland Browns or potentially joining the rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Browns fans have expressed interest in the franchise's third all-time leading rusher returning, according to local reports.

Both the Browns and Steelers could use depth at running back. For the Steelers, Chubb could complement their existing backfield, offering a physical presence familiar with AFC North play.

Veteran backs like Elliott and Chubb represent options for teams needing experience and depth after addressing other positions in the draft.

As Scott Polacek noted, "Elliott has plenty of experience playing alongside quarterback Dak Prescott, would surely be willing to take a smaller role for a team he knows so well and would provide some depth for a running back room that isn't loaded with talent."
