Oliver Oakes has resigned as Team Principal of the Alpine Formula One team, effective immediately, the team announced Tuesday. Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore will take over the duties previously held by Oakes.
The change follows the Miami Grand Prix, the sixth race of the current F1 season. Alpine currently sits ninth in the constructors’ championship standings with seven points.
Oakes joined Alpine in July 2024, overseeing the team’s efforts that resulted in a sixth-place finish in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship.
Flavio Briatore returned to an advisory role with the team last year, a month after Oakes' arrival. Briatore previously led the team in its prior incarnation as Renault, securing championship titles in 2005 and 2006.
A statement from the team confirmed the change, stating Alpine had accepted Oakes’ resignation.
“As of today, Flavio Briatore will continue as Executive Advisor and will also be covering the duties previously performed by Oliver Oakes,” the team statement read.
The statement thanked Oakes for his contributions since joining last summer, noting his role in the team's 2024 performance.
Questions surrounding the team's driver lineup, specifically concerning rookie Jack Doohan, have been present through the early part of the 2025 season. Media reports have speculated Alpine is considering replacing Doohan with Franco Colapinto. Oakes fielded questions about the driver situation during the Miami weekend.
His departure adds Oakes to a list of Alpine Team Principals who have left the position in recent years, including Otmar Szafnauer and Bruno Famin.
