The Seattle Mariners activated right-handed reliever Matt Brash from the injured list Saturday. The move marks his return to the major league roster for the first time since September 2023.
Brash missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. His return comes after he completed a rehab assignment in Triple-A Tacoma.
He made six appearances for the Tacoma Rainiers, pitching 5 1/3 innings. During his rehab, he allowed five earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Brash last pitched in a major league game on Sept. 30, 2023.
In a corresponding move, the Mariners optioned right-handed reliever Troy Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma. Taylor's own season was slowed by a lat strain sustained during Spring Training.
Before his injury, Matt Brash had established himself as a key high-leverage arm in the Mariners bullpen. He made his MLB debut in 2022.
During the 2023 season, Brash posted a 3.06 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 70 2/3 innings in 78 games. His performance included a high strikeout rate powered by a sweeping slider and curveball.
The Mariners bullpen currently includes reigning American League Reliever of the Month Andrés Muñoz, who has been used primarily in a closing role early in the 2025 season. Brash is expected to bolster the team's relief depth.
His usage will likely be managed carefully initially following the surgery, with back-to-back appearances potentially limited in the coming months.
The Mariners entered Saturday's game with a 19-12 record, leading the American League West division. They have won five straight games and 15 of their past 19.
