LOS ANGELES — Phillip Danault scored his second goal late, giving the Los Angeles Kings a 6-5 win over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of their Western Conference First Round series Monday. The Kings victory came after they saw a four-goal lead erased in the third period.
Danault's winning shot, a fluttering wrist attempt, found the net with 42 seconds left in regulation at Crypto.com Arena. This followed Connor McDavid tying the game for the Oilers less than a minute earlier.
The Kings built a 4-0 advantage through two periods. Goals came from Andrei Kuzmenko, Quinton Byfield, Adrian Kempe, and Danault. Goalie Darcy Kuemper made 20 saves for Los Angeles.
Edmonton mounted a significant comeback in the third period. Leon Draisaitl scored late in the second period to make it 4-1. Mattias Janmark, Corey Perry, and Zach Hyman added goals in the third, pulling the Oilers even at 5-5.
McDavid finished with a goal and three assists for Edmonton. Draisaitl and Perry each contributed a goal and an assist. Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 24 shots.
Kings captain Anze Kopitar acknowledged Edmonton's offensive skill after the game. Oilers forward Mattias Janmark noted the strong pushback from his team despite the late loss.
