The Dallas Cowboys recently made a move to acquire quarterback Joe Milton from the New England Patriots. This transaction brings a young player with potential to the Cowboys' depth chart, placing him behind established starter Dak Prescott.

Prescott, the team's franchise quarterback, remains the primary signal-caller for the Cowboys. However, the addition of Milton provides another option should the need arise.

When speaking to reporters about the team's quarterback situation, Prescott commented on the change. He noted the value Cooper Rush had provided as a teammate and expressed hope that Milton would offer similar support.

Prescott highlighted the importance of collaborative effort in the quarterback room. He stated his desire for all quarterbacks to push each other to improve.

The Cowboys added a dynamic player by sending a fifth-round pick to New England for Milton and a seventh-round pick. Milton had a brief appearance with the Patriots in 2024.

Concerns about Prescott's health after a hamstring injury have led some to suggest the Cowboys need more experienced depth. The team lost Cooper Rush and Trey Lance from the previous season.

This has fueled speculation that the Cowboys might look to add more competition at the backup spot, potentially via a trade for a player like Sam Howell of the Seattle Seahawks. Howell carries a $4 million contract.

Reports indicate Seattle is open to trading Howell, and Dallas has been mentioned as a possible destination. However, some observers question the wisdom of trading more draft capital for another backup after acquiring Joe Milton.

Milton is expected to serve as the primary backup to Prescott. While he won't challenge for the starting job in Dallas, the possibility exists for him to play if Prescott is sidelined.

Reflecting on the addition of Milton, Prescott said of the quarterback room, "I’m excited to add Joe to the room and I know Will is as well."
