The University of New Haven will join the Northeast Conference and begin its transition to NCAA Division I athletics on July 1, 2025. University President Jens Frederiksen and NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris announced the decision Tuesday.

The move positions the university to become a full Division I member in the 2028-29 academic year, following a reclassification period mandated by the NCAA.

“Making the move to Division I is a bold step, and we’re honored that New Haven chose to take that step with us,” Morris said. “From the start, it was clear that they share our values – putting academics, competitive excellence and the student-athlete experience at the forefront.”

The University of New Haven, located on Connecticut’s southern coast, is set to become the NEC’s tenth full-time member. The institution was founded in 1920.

New Haven sponsors 20 varsity sports programs, 19 of which align with NEC sponsored sports. The Chargers will be integrated into the NEC athletic schedules starting with the 2025-26 academic year, though the timing for the football program's addition remains under review.

During its reclassification, New Haven programs can immediately compete in NEC Championships for sports that do not receive automatic NCAA qualifying bids, including cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Full NEC Championship access will be available as early as the 2026-27 year but no later than 2027-28, contingent on other conference members completing their transitions.

Eligibility for NCAA Championship competition is slated for the 2028-29 academic year upon successful completion of the reclassification process.

“We are thrilled about this opportunity for the University of New Haven,” President Frederiksen said. “Athletics has been and continues to be a driver of enrollment and brand recognition for the University. This move to the Northeast Conference and Division I positions the University for an exciting future.”
