LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers opened their playoff run with a decisive 117-95 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, appearing unprepared for Minnesota's assertive, physical style of play.
Despite earning a week of rest leading into the series, the Lakers could not match the intensity displayed by the Timberwolves in the Game 1 contest. The defeat puts the Lakers at a disadvantage early in the first-round matchup.
"I'm not sure physically we were ready," Lakers coach JJ Redick said after the game, noting his team did not adequately respond when Minnesota began playing with significant "thrust and physicality."
Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels led his team with 25 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Edwards added 22 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Naz Reid contributed 23 points off the bench for Minnesota.
The Timberwolves showcased strong shooting throughout the game, hitting 51.2 percent from the field and a franchise-record 21 of 42 attempts from beyond the arc. This offensive performance contrasted sharply with the Lakers' 39.8 percent field goal shooting.
For the Lakers, Luka Doncic scored a team-high 37 points with eight rebounds. LeBron James finished with 19 points, and Austin Reaves added 16.
The Timberwolves dominated key aspects of the game, outscoring Los Angeles 25-6 on fast-break points and holding a substantial 43-13 advantage in bench scoring.
Minnesota seized control in the second quarter, outscoring the Lakers 38-20 to take a 59-48 lead into halftime. The lead grew quickly in the third quarter with an 11-0 run to start the half.
Both teams faced injury concerns during the game. Anthony Edwards briefly left the court in the third quarter with a leg issue but returned. Naz Reid departed in the fourth quarter after taking an elbow.
The loss highlights the challenge facing the Lakers as they attempt to regroup before Game 2 of the series, scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles.
"I think that they just physically beat us from the get-go," Lakers guard Austin Reaves said.
